Beauty Box 5 review (November)

Beauty Box 5 has provided me with a complimentary subscription for review purposes. All opinions in this post are my own.

I have a new subscription box to tell you about, it’s called Beauty Box 5 and I kind of love it.

I’m going to go ahead and admit that I already like Beauty Box 5 better than Birchbox – for one simple reason. And that is I have already used EVERYTHING in this box. That isn’t always the case with my Birchbox subscription. BB5 hit this first box out of the water.

Birchbox is great and I have certainly enjoyed getting my surprises each month, but I think Beauty Box 5 fits more into my busy lifestyle. So here is what I got in my first box:

1.) Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion – I already use this lotion, so I was thrilled to receive more of it in this box. The lotion leaves my hands feeling incredibly soft and moisturized, which is so important as the winter months approach. I like to keep a bottle of lotion in multiple places (my work desk, my nightstand, my car, my purse, my travel bag) so I always have some should my hands start to feel dry or tight.

2.) Model Co Illusion Lip Pencil – I do have to say that I learned about Model Co from Birchbox (so maybe they just got a few points back on their side). This is a nude lip pencil that keeps my lips soft all day. I like that it is nude, because it helps tone down my lipsticks if I think they are too red. I haven’t used it to create a plumping pout yet (the intended use), but maybe soon.

3.) Swissco Glitter Toe Separators – I don’t often use toe separators when applying toenail polish, but these cute glitter ones certainly made me rethink that choice. The glitter just makes anything fun. Toe separators are great, especially if you have toes that don’t separate. I actually have toes that separate really far. I didn’t realize this was such a rarity until Baby K showcased the same skill and people went crazy; everyone was shocked how far apart she could spread her toes. So these toe separators might make a great gift for someone, especially the glitter – that screams holidays!

4.) La Fresh Travel Lite Facial Cleansing Wipes – I have quite the weakness for cleansing wipes. They just make washing your face so much easier. Being a total neat freak, I love these because you don’t splash water all over the sink when washing your face. J (I’m crazy – its true) And this brand is terrific, the wipes have a great scent to them and I felt like they really removed everything from my face. I highly recommend these!

5.) Nubar Alter Ego Nail Lacquer in Blondie – All I can say about this is love it! And just like the toe separators, the glitter in this polish will definitely make the holidays brighter. I love this polish because I can wear it alone, or layer it over a color. So I will get a ton of uses out of it.

So there you go, my first Beauty Box 5 was a good one. Beauty Box 5 is a beauty subscription service that sends a box with five different beauty samples to your mailbox each month for just $12.

If you are curious about these subscription boxes, let me just tell you a few things. If you like receiving mail (who doesn’t?) and if you love surprises, a subscription box is for you. There are a ton of beauty product boxes out there, but there are also subscription boxes for other things too (like paper products, clothing, nail polish, men’s items, etc). For most boxes you can either pay per month and get a box when you want a surprise or sign up for a recurring subscription that delivers something to your door each month. These boxes also make great gifts and with Christmas just around the corner, it might be worth it to purchase a box for the beauty obsessed lady in your life. I know she will love it. And I HIGHLY recommend you purchase her a Beauty Box 5.

Wore: Black Denim

Somebody call 1993 and tell them I have their pants! I cannot believe I not only tried on a pair of black denim pants, but that I purchased them. Seriously, who am I? But I think I will eat crow and say that I absolutely love these pants!

These are the perfect pants to dress up or down. The denim keeps them semi casual, the black makes them easy to dress up. And oh my goodness, can we talk about the stretch quality of these pants? They are so comfortable. Old Navy kind of has it going on with these things. I could practically sleep in them. Who has a pair of jeans that they can even say that about?

I think it is safe to say that these have just become my new favorite pants. They are comfortable, versatile and oh so fun. I may be wearing these a lot. Which is a pretty bold statement since I prefer to wear skirts and dresses because I’m so not a fan of my thighs. But if people keep making pants this comfortable, I just might start wearing them all the time.

Cardigan and Polka Dot Top: Loft.
Pants: Old Navy.
Boots: Target!
Earrings: Silpada.
Scarf: c/o Very Jane.
Bracelets: gift.

Gallery Wall

The entry way to our house has been pretty empty for quite some time. I’ve always wanted to put a little table or something there, but the space isn’t really that large to hold a table unless we want to bump into it every time we enter or leave the house. But I so desperately wanted to create some sort of welcoming feel to our home, so I began scouting for gallery wall items.

The idea for a gallery wall all started when I found a cute black shelf at Michael’s that was on sale. We all know women and sales; I just couldn’t pass it up so I purchased that puppy and brought it home. I immediately had Tolar hang the shelf up for me and I found some pictures that I liked to display on it. I then found this print and framed it, adding it to my entry way wall. And that is where I stopped.

I was constantly looking for items, but I didn’t want to add anything else until I felt like I had enough items to make the gallery wall. So every time I went to Michael’s or Target or Home Goods or Bed, Bath and Beyond I was on the lookout for fun items that could go on my wall. And it took me over a year to really find everything, but I’m so glad I waited.  Because I love the way everything turned out.

I love how with a gallery wall, you really don’t have to measure anything. The idea is to place the pieces where you want them and not space everything out evenly. It was so fun and freeing for Tolar and I to hang everything because if we missed our mark by a tiny little bit, it didn’t matter.  And I love that you get to be eclectic when creating a gallery wall, not every frame needs to match. The point is to showcase different tastes and styles.

Our wall includes photos of Tolar and I, a newborn photo of Baby K printed on a canvas from Easy Canvas Prints, a fun last name print from Very Jane, a quote print courtesy of Minted, a map of Venice (where we went on our honeymoon) and a free printable I found from a google image search.

And the piece de resistance? This hook that I found at Bed, Bath and Beyond on clearance for $2. I told Tolar I had to buy it because it was only $2 (we have a running joke in our house that we only waste our money on the cheap/inexpensive things). I didn’t know what I wanted to do with it, but I felt like it was calling my name. And that little $2 hook brought the entire gallery wall together. It helped keep everything from looking so symmetrical. I love the finished product!

(I tried to label where I got everything, if something isn't labeled, its because I either got it from a friend or don't remember! If you have a question, feel free to leave that in the comments section below.)

How To (Almost) Ruin Your Family Photos...

Funny story for you...
If you didn't know, its No Shave November. I've heard of this event in the past and knew the No Shave was intended for men (and I guess those few women who fight back!), but I didn't really know much more than that. One morning I was watching the Today Show and heard Matt Lauer and Al Roker say that they were going to participate and I casually (and kind of jokingly) mentioned to Tolar that he should consider participating.

You see, Tolar doesn't really grow facial hair. He might need to shave like once a week - tops. I so hope he doesn't get upset that I'm writing this for everyone to see. I have only ever seen him with a little stubble before he just starts looking like a dirty slacker. So I thought it would be cool to see what his beard would actually look like if he didn't shave for the whole month. And without me needing to twist his arm, offer to do something crazy in return or even offer up reasons why he should participate, Tolar agreed!

Ok, cool - I get to see what he looks like with a beard, maybe. But then we go and decide that we want to get photos taken of the three of us so we can send out holiday cards. Nice move there Lindsay, because now Tolar is going to look all disheveled in those pics. People are going to think that Baby K isn't sleeping through the night or something. Oh well, I decide its ok, his beard might actually look normal at the end of the month and I'm sure our pictures will be fine (plus everyone will finally see the red in his beard and maybe quit asking us where Baby K's red hair comes from).

But my amazing and do good husband decides that he isn't going to stop there. Oh no, he decides to join some guys that he knows (well he knows one of them, the rest he met on the internet!) and raise money for Prostate Cancer (what No Shave November is all about). And if they each raise $5000 by the end of the month they will....wait for it...shave. their. heads!!!! Tolar informs me of this and I am immediately thankful that our photo session is scheduled for November, so I won't have to worry about a shaved head AND a full beard. But then I realize that Tolar's family wants to get family photos taken and I kind of freak out. He is going to have a shaved head in those pictures for sure, because we won't see them until December! His mom and sister are going to kill me (deny all of your involvement Lindsay).

Luckily, Tolar decides to extend his fundraising deadline a bit, so we can take family photos featuring only the beard. He won't shave his head until later in December. Crisis kind of averted. And I write all of this as if Tolar has raised the $5000 because I KNOW he is going to. Especially if he knows that I'm less than thrilled about a shaved head. Have you seen the size of our heads? Yes, I'm adding myself to that because its no secret, we are a family with rather large craniums. I'm not so sure a huge bald head sitting on top of Tolar's body is the way to go. Or maybe it is? People will constantly ask him why he shaved his head, thus opening the door to talk even further about raising money for cancer - because cancer sucks! And beating that beast is the ultimate goal.

So maybe I'm not as worried about it in reality, because at the end of the day the point of this is to raise awareness and money for cancer. Not to worry about Tolar's healthy appearance. His hair will always grow back, others aren't that lucky. And our photos won't be ruined. If anything, when Baby K is older and looks back at photos of her first Christmas, she will see a man who has a huge heart for helping others. A loving man who sticks to what he says he will do, despite it messing up his appearance. She will see her strong Daddy, setting an example that one person can make a difference.

Do you want to get in on the action and actually see Tolar reach his goal? Or maybe you just really want to see Tolar with a shaved head? It doesn't matter the reason, what does matter is that we work to raise money and help stop cancer!
If you would like to donate to Tolar's cause, simply click this link. Tolar has set up his fundraiser on an awesome site called CrowdRise, so you will be submitting your payment on a secure site. And any donation is 100% tax deductible to the extent allowed by law (for all of the info, click here.)

We all know someone who has cancer, who lost a battle with cancer, or is at least affected by cancer. This horrible beast needs to be stopped. Won't you help Tolar try to reach his goal to make a difference? Any amount helps. I thank you in advance for even considering a donation. I'm so proud of Tolar for taking this on, he is going to change the world starting by setting an awesome example for our baby girl.

High Five For Friday

Happy Friday everyone! High Five – you made it through another week.
Here are some of my favorite moments from this very crazy week I just had. The days kind of went by in a blur, but I still had some time to reflect on the small things that make me smile.

1.) My mom sent a little care package to Baby K full of new clothes for her. I am in love with these Christmas fleece sleepers; I kind of wish they came in adult sizes.

2.) Burp cloths, birth clock – same thing, right? According to Siri yes. Also, I love that Siri thinks my daughter is an e-reader. J Although once we found out that Baby K had red hair, my dad immediately started calling her Kendall (Kindle) Fire.

3.) I got a Happy Mommy Box this week. It is full of fun things to make me (the mommy) happy! Such a genius idea and such fun mail. To see what was in my box, follow me on instagram. I posted a video when I first received it, showing everything that was in it.

4.) My Dad makes me smile! He had a little fun with the Santa at Walgreens and posted a pic on facebook. After the interesting creatures/figurines that my Dad bought for the house at Halloween, my sister and I both told him that he better NOT buy this Santa. My Mom also agreed with us.
Sweet lunchbox Dad!

5.) Someone met their giraffe friend Sophie and is now in love!

You guys have got to check out Stevie and her blog Colorful Commotion. If for no other reason than I think we might be the same person! She lived in Southwest Virginia (about 40 minutes from where I grew up) and now lives in Northern Virginia too. When Stevie and I first discovered each other’s blogs we had no clue! The tagline to her blog is “Finding The Bright Spots In Life’s Little Messes” and I love that so many of her posts do just that. Like this wedding post where she talks about things that went wrong on her wedding day, but she didn’t let that phase her. The wedding was still awesome (side note, a few crazy things happened at my wedding too and we still had the best party ever!). And this post where she received an amazing bit of affirmation from an unlikely source – beautiful. If you are looking for a blog that looks on the bright side and just makes you feel better because you read it, then hop right over to Colorful Commotion right now.
